Discount Calculator

A discount calculator answers one question fast: what do I actually pay? The interactive version lives on our percent off calculator, with preset chips, stacked discounts, and sales tax. This page covers the formula so you can sanity check any deal.

The discount formula

Sale price = original price x (1 - discount as a decimal). A 25% discount means you pay 75% of the price: $80 x 0.75 = $60. Your savings are the original price minus the sale price: $80 - $60 = $20, or 25%.

Stacked discounts

Two discounts multiply, they do not add. A 20% store discount plus an extra 10% off coupon: $80 x 0.8 = $64, then $64 x 0.9 = $57.60. The combined savings are 28%, not 30%. Our percent off calculator runs this stacked math for you automatically.

Sales tax on discounted items

Retailers charge sales tax on the discounted price, not the original. At 8% tax, a $60 sale price costs $64.80 out the door. Enter your local tax rate on the calculator to get the true total.
